Teacher Training

We are fortunate in the Northern area of UK to have a long established Iyengar Yoga Teacher Training programme, run by Margaret Austin who is recognised by BKS Iyengar and the UK National Iyengar Yoga Association as being one of the most senior teachers in the UK.

The course duration is two years, with weekly attendance at the classes held in the Sunderland area. National assessments take place at the end of each year. To apply for the course you need to have:

  • 3 years of regular attendance at an Iyengar class taught by a qualified IY(UK) registered Iyengar Yoga teacher.
  • A letter of recommendation and support from your Iyengar teacher.

Pre-selection days are held to confirm that the starting standard has been achieved.

An 8 week preliminary course is also now available to help students fine tune their yoga practice to attain the required standards for applying to the teacher training programme.

If you wish to apply for the teacher training programme or the preliminary course, please see the Contact page.

For a syllabus and information on more advanced teaching certificates refer to www.iyengaryoga.org.uk.

Qualified Iyengar Yoga Teachers

A Certificated Iyengar Yoga Teacher has followed a precisely graded syllabus, learns detailed knowledge of yoga postures and sequencing, and learns about the use of props to create the safe and correct alignment of the body.

In the UK, high standards of teaching are ensured by a syllabus of training, examinations and assessments endorsed by the IY(UK), and by Mr BKS Iyengar in Pune, India. Teaching standards and up-to–date knowledge is maintained through the requirement for qualified teachers to attend national Professional Development days. The NEIIY community also has an on-going Friday evening class for qualified Iyengar yoga teachers.

Teaching Qualifications: Introductory Level 1; Introductory Level 2; Intermediate Junior Level 1; Intermediate Junior Level 2; Intermediate Junior Level 3; Intermediate Senior Level 1; Intermediate Senior Level 2; Intermediate Senior Level 3; Advanced Junior Level 1; Advanced Junior Level 2; Advanced Junior Level 3; Advanced Senior Level 1; Advanced Senior Level 2.
